Paul Flint, Jr.

Paul L. Flint,� 90, of Murrells Inlet died Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at his residence. He was born on February 15, 1924 in New Haven Connecticut,� son of the late Paul Flint, Sr. and Mary Smith Flint. Paul attended New Haven State Teacher's College and the University of New Hampshire. His education was cut short by military service in 1942. He was a rifleman in Company C of the 104th Infantry Regiment, US Army between Dec 1, 1942 and May 3, 1943. He was wounded fighting in France and received a Purple Heart.�� Following his military service, thanks to the GI Bill, he was able to continue his education� earning his BA from Fordham University and his Master's Degree from Georgetown University.� He subsequently taught American History at the University of Maryland while employed� at the Defense Department.

During his long career with the Defense Department of the U.S. Government, he traveled worldwide, from the African Congo to South Korea. His postings included: Verona, Italy; Frankfurt, Germany; and Washington, DC. His career accomplishments where recognized as he received numerous awards that� included: the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal (awarded by Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger); the Bronze Palm Meritorious Civilian Service Medal (awarded by Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger); the Order of National Security Merit; and National Security Merit (SAMIL) medal from the Republic of Korea. He was also invited to attend the Department of State's Foreign Service Institute as a Senior Scholar.�

In retirement, Paul and his wife Alice lived in Ghent and Rhinebeck, NY; Lewes, DE; Ossining, NY; and Murrells Inlet, SC. He was an active parishioner in the Roman Catholic Church wherever he lived. He was a lifelong reader and an ardent advocate of the public library system and a huge opera fan. Paul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice Brady Flint and their children, Laura Mary Flint, Paul Flint III and his wife Alyson, Katy Flint Coppinger and her husband John Coppinger,� Margretta Flint and her partner MaryEllen Yarossi.� He also leaves behind grandchildren - Paul Flint IV, Natasha Flint, Victoria Flint Gibson and her husband Donald Gibson� and Andrew Coppinger.�

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 12 Noon, Monday, September 8, 2014 at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father John Duraisamy. Inurnment will be announced for Arlington National Cemetery.

There will be a wake from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Burroughs Funeral Home.
